There are two basic types of home elevators, cable winding drum and hydraulic. Cable winding drum elevators use steel cables that wind and unwind on an electric motor. This type of elevator travels about 30 feet per minute and has a weight capacity of 500 to 750 lbs.
Hydraulic elevators use a hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower the elevator cab. While hydraulic elevators are slightly more expensive they have a smoother ride with softer starts and stops. This type of elevator also has a larger weight capacity of 950 lbs. The standard size for a home elevator cab is 3'x4' and is available up to 3'x6'.
